田んぼは地球の奇跡だ。このいのちの宝石箱は、自然の一部として持続する循環の一役を担ってきた。 そしてこの宝石箱は、お百姓さんの仕事で支えられている。 自然の一員としてのお百姓さんの仕事は、自然環境を外側から眺めずに、 自然とつながっていくことで生かされているのだ。

Miracle of our planet, the rice field. This jewel case has been playing an important role in the sustainable circulating system as a part of nature. What supports this jewel case is the work of those engaged in agriculture that do not see nature just from the outside, but are always connected to nature. Agriculture is kept alive this way as a valuable part of nature.

存在していることに意味がある。名前があろがなかろうが。小さかろうが大きかろうが。数が少かろうが多かろうが。色や形が違っていたとしても。 なぜだかわからないけれど、その存在を素直に受け入れればいいんじゃないだろうか。 田んぼが生み出しているもの。それは、決して米粒だけではない。自然や文化、地域社会をも生み出している田んぼのめぐみを感じて欲しい。

There is great purpose in being alive - whether it has a name or not, whether it is in large or small quantity or whatever shape or color it has. It doesn't matter what it is. What we should do is just accept it for what it is. Creatures born in a rice field are not just grains of rice. The natural environment, culture and local communities are also born from it. Hope you feel the abundant gifts from the rice fields.

ここにいる総てのものを包んでくれている。これが地球だ。 私たちはの周りは地球のめぐみで溢れているのだ。 抱かれていると感じれば、何をすべきかは自ずからわかるだろう。

Everything here lies within the embrace of nature - this is the earth. Once you feel you are full of natural blessings and are in the bosom of the mother earth, you'll know what to do.

一説には、秩父市には一年間で400もの祭があるそうだ。 そのほとんどが夏に主催されるため、7月と8月の日曜日は、毎週どこかの地区で祭が行われる。 同じ日に数十もの祭が開催される日曜日もあるのだ。

「TOMORROW」の取材地 栃谷地区の守護神を祀っている栃谷八坂神社の例大祭が、今年（2008年）は、7月27日に行われた。 有形民族文化財の笠鉾三基が6年ぶりに勢ぞろいした今年の夏祭りは、 若上（ワカジョウ）、上若衆（カミワカシュウ）を中心に、 地元の老若男女みんなで笠鉾を押して引いた、みんなが主役の夏祭りだ。

山川草木のめぐみと地域のつながりを育み大切に未来に継承することは、 神様から託された人間の役割だと、栃谷の夏祭りに参加させていただいてそう感じた。

Someone said there're about 400 festivals in Chichibu annually. Most of them are held in summer, so more than several festivals are held simul taneoulsy on Sundays in July and August.

This year, the annual festival of Tochiya Yasaka Shrine was held on Sunday, 27th July. The shrine is dedicated to guardian deity of Tochiya, the area we are focusing on as a feature of our site TOMORROW. This summer, three floats that have been designated as important tangible folk cultural properties gathered for the first time in six years and were carried by local men and women, young and old, led by young leaders called Wakajo and Kamiwakashu. Everyone played the leading part; hero or heroine - it was a summer festival where everyone became a hero or heroine.

Taking part of the festival, we really felt that fostering neighborhood ties and natural blessings of the mountains, rivers, plants and trees, and passing them onto the future generation must be a human role assigned by God.

人間が緑を求める心の深層には、明るい光への憧れと願いと崇拝が込められている。 盛夏の稲は、輝きを絶やすことのない地上の太陽のように明るく眩しい。 この稲に希望を託し、子孫の繁栄、地域の繁栄を願う気持ちが一段と高まる。 盛夏の稲には、人びとをそういう気分にさせる魔力が潜んでいる。 （ 2008年7月26日に撮影 ）

In the deeper layer of people's mind seeking for green, there lie yearning, wish and adoration for bright light. Rice plants in high summer are so bright and dazzling like the sun that never stop shining. Placing our hopes in the rice plants, our wish for prosperity of offspring and the region become even stronger. It is the magical power of the midsummer rice plants that makes us feel that way. ( Photographed on Sat. 26th July )
